10/1 – 10/7

We were on Ormond Beach for the first couple of days of the month along with brother, Edward, and nephew, Mat.   We returned to Palmetto on Monday afternoon, 10/3, so that I could go to a one-week follow-up appointment with my surgeon.  On Tuesday, Dr. South told us that the pathology report from the hysterectomy indicated that the cancer had grown through approximately 60% of my uterine wall.  At 50%, they consider it gone.  At 60% they say I have a 20% chance that the cancer could re-occur.  With radiation, that chance would be reduced to 5% or less.  So I have opted to get the radiation treatments (5 days a week for 6 weeks) after we return from our cruise.  I saw my regular doctor on Wednesday afternoon and after returning to the boat got a call from Ormond saying that Rick’s mother had passed away.  There is no memorial get-together planned as yet.

Gerry Hoffmeister, Rick's Mother

 Geraldine Foltz Hoffmeister

Born 2/10/25

Died 10/5/16

Age 91

We were going to go over there, but Hurricane Mathew was headed that way.  That evening, the government issued a mandatory evacuation order for everyone living on the beach side or Ormond.  (That included Edward.)  He and Mat went to stay at my Dad’s cabin in the Ocala Forest on Thursday, 10/6.  They lost power there during the night, so on Friday,10/7, they left Ocala with Mat returning to Knoxville and Edward coming to Palmetto to stay on the boat with us until power has been restored at his home.

10/7/10/19/2016Edward stayed with us on the boat through Monday, 10/10.  He returned to Ormond while we were at Moffitt for another infusion for Rick.  When we left Moffitt, we went up I-75 to Ocala and went by the cabin to make sure there was no damage there before going on to Ormond.  We were in Ormond for a week starting Monday evening, staying at Edward’s.  His yard guy cleaned up most of the major tree limbs in the yard and lumber washed up on his dock.  Roofers came and repaired the roof over the “pool house” addition.  Then ServePro came to work on the water damage in the addition, taking out the dropped ceiling tiles and insulation in the ceiling and drying out the couch, bed and rugs.  Since it has not yet been 3 weeks since my hysterectomy, I was not able to help with a lot of the cleanup, so my main focus was to go through Rick and Edward’s mother’s “stuff”.  I made a good dent in that project this week, but it is going to take a lot more.

We left Ormond Beach Sunday morning 10/17/16, returning to Palmetto.  Meeting Sunday evening and all day Monday with attorney’s regarding Rick’s Mesothelioma.

Tuesday, I had an appointment with my surgeon for my 3-week follow-up after hysterectomy.  All looks good, next appointment in January.  Wednesday, 10/19, , I saw the radiation doc to discuss when I will be able to start my radiation treatments.  Good news – I will only need one treatment a week for 3 weeks in January.

Thursday, October 20, leave the boat at 5 a.m., fly out of Tampa to Los Angeles then transfer to the Crown Princess to start our cruise to Hawaii, Samoa, and Tahiti returning on November 17th.
