We’ve just returned from the Fort Lauderdale boat show.  We had good luck in purchasing the last few remaining items we needed to start out.  We bought a water maker, a heavier anchor and an additional freezer.  Wednesday, we plan a trip to Sam’s to buy the stuff to fill the freezer.

While in Fort Lauderdale, we reconnected with some old college (FSU) buddies, Suzy and David.  We enjoyed dinner in their home one night and they joined us for dinner at the Coral Ridge Yacht Club one evening.  We look forward to seeing them again at the beginning of January, just before heading to the Bahamas.

Rick has been busy installing things on the boat and has been happy to be “disconnected” from the world for a while without a vehicle or a phone.  We will maintain my cell phone until January and then switch to the satellite phone, but the mustang goes up for sale as soon as we pull away from the wall at the BYC.

Big Week

This was a big week for us.  On Tuesday, October 4, 2011, Bright House Networks threw a great retirement party for Rick at the Bradenton Yacht Club.  Approximately 100 people were in attendance.  There were some great speeches referencing Rick’s 37 years in the cable industry (with over 20 of them working in Manatee County).  On Thursday, October 6, 2011, we attended the annual banquet for the North River Care Pregnancy Center where Charlene was awarded the Hearts for Life Award for volunteer work.  Friday, October 7, 2011, was Rick’s last day to report to work.  After his exit interview, he came to the Manatee office to turn in his car, his computer and his phone.  While there, he was able to enjoy one last “perfect attendance cookout luncheon” with his co-workers from the Manatee system.

For the next few weeks, we continue to get the boat ready for the long voyage.  This includes a road trip to the Ft. Lauderdale boat show at the end of October.

On November 3, we leave Riviera Dunes Marina, our home for the last 15 months, to begin our travels south.  We plan to spend December in the keys and head over to the Bahamas in January.  From there, we will follow the island chain south until we reach Venezuela.  We hope to return to Florida via the western Caribbean and the gulf coasts.  We have no time table, but we will keep everyone informed of our journey through this website.
