Chub Cay Club.  We are well protected from the wind here, tied to the floating dock.  We had lunch at the Harbour House Restaurant and then went exploring.  We walked around the marina basin, past the Fish Cleaning House, by the store (which was closed) and to the fuel dock.

The dockhand told us that if we followed the road past the church for about a mile, we would find the airport and a bar/restaurant, so we continued our walk – now with a destination in mind.

Chub Cay ChapelI was very glad to note that this island seems to be pretty flat and the road which we followed was lined by Casuarina trees, aka Australian Pines, which provided a nice amount of shade.  About an hour after we left the boat, we came upon the airstrip, crossed over it and walked to a brightly colored building which we figured must be the bar.  The bar man needed to run an errand and said he would be gone for just a few minutes.  We were happy for the time to just sit and enjoy the view.

Charlene sitting on the PoarchUpon his return, we had a couple of drinks and some conversation with him.  We learned from him that Chub Cay has, indeed, been sold and the new owner of the island was due to fly in on a jet this afternoon.  About an hour after our arrival “Solly” offered to drive us back to the marina and I gratefully accepted.  We spent a little while in the pool after returning from our island exploration and then watched a glorious sunset before relaxing on the boat for the rest of the evening.

Sunset at Chub Cay ClubWe wished our daughter-in-law, Kellie, a happy birthday on Sunday.  JP says she is spending the morning with Rebecca (who co-hosted her baby shower with me) and then they are having dinner with Rebecca and her husband, Grey (who has been a friend of JP’s for about 25 years.)

Harbour House Restaurant at Chub Cay ClubWe ate breakfast in The Harbour House at the Chub Cay Club pictured above and saw more people in the restaurant than we have seen in any one place since we’ve been on this island.  (That was about 10!)  We paid $9.95 for Rick’s two-egg breakfast and $11.95 for my no-meat omelet breakfast.  The meals included a large glass of orange juice, all the coffee you wished to drink, hash browns or grits and an English muffin or Bahamian toast.  The portions were so large that I couldn’t eat all of mine.

Rick drinking coffee at the Harbour House RestaurantWhile I baked some cookies in the afternoon, Rick returned to Harry’s Bar in the Harbour House.  He had a nice, long chat with Remedy, one of the long-time staffers (approximately 40 years).  We had previously noticed the name Ed Dunn on the list of club members which is posted in the entryway.  Rick went to school with a fellow named Ed Dunn, who later became Florida’s Volusia County Sheriff.  Rick asked Remedy if he knew where their member, Ed Dunn, was from and he replied that he thought he lived in the Daytona Beach area – so that means, it is probably the guy with whom Rick went to High School.  It’s a small, small world.

BD787 – Monday, March 3, 2014 – As the sun rose over the Australian pines to the east of the Chub Cay Club Marina, we started our engines and headed west northwest to our final destination (also our first) in the Bahamas, Bimini.  We took on about 100 gallons of fuel at $5.50/gallon and were tied up in the lucky number 13 slip at the Bimini Sands Resort and Marina minutes before our 4:00 goal.  We checked in, set the plot for Ft. Lauderdale and then relaxed by the pool for a while.  They have recently finished a new infinity pool overlooking the beach.  They plan to have a restaurant/bar there, but it is still under construction.  The Bimini Sands Resort provides transportation via a small bus from the marina/condos up the road to the ferry dock and down the road to their beach club, bar and restaurant.  Quite a few of us boarded the bus at our stop leaving only two seats available.  Then, a group of 12 who were staying at the Big Game Club got on making it standing room only.  When we all piled out of the bus a few minutes later, we were surprised to see that the restaurant was dark.  A gentleman came out of the bar (appropriately called the Sand Bar because it actually has sand on the floor) and told us that the restaurant was closed on Monday, but we could eat at the bar.  We had a good meal and a good time.

BD788 – Tuesday, March 3, 2014 – We left the Bimini Sands Marina, after paying our bill of $70.50 for dockage 4nd $20 for electricity, at approximately 8:30, headed across the Gulf Stream to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.  We dislike having to say goodbye to the Bahamas, but we know that we will return.
