January 1 – 15

Happy New Year to all my friends and family.

Vanessa came on the first to show me her new car and visit with her family for a while.

Dad and I enjoyed a traditional Southern New Year’s Day dinner which included ham, black-eyed peas and rice (aka hopinjohn), greens and corn bread. I couldn’t decide what was the traditional desert, so I just got what we both like – lemon meringue pie. The rest of the first week was pretty quiet. My niece, Shay Cambre, celebrated a significant birthday on the 3rd ( I will not tell her age).  On Tuesday, 1/7, Teri Giles, the director of the North River Care Pregnancy Center, and I were excited to meet with Evan Guido of Aksala Wealth Management and some of his staff to discuss their ideas to host a fundraiser for the center. I will tell more about this event as the details unfold – but we are shooting for the first Friday in April. I attended choir practice on Wednesday night, 1/8; and visited shut-ins Thursday morning 1/9, along with attending a North River Care (NRC) Pregnancy Center board meeting that evening. On Friday, 1/10, I indulged myself by getting a massage. We watched football on Saturday 1/11 and went to church and Sunday school on Sunday 1/12 with more football that afternoon. I also heard from my brother, Bill, that they had finally bought the 5th wheeler that they plan to do extensive travelling in.

On the 13th, I tried a new cleaning service in the morning and we watched the College Football Championship – LSU vs Clemson that evening. Tuesday, the 14th, I volunteered doing data input in the church office and working at the pregnancy center. On Wednesday, the 15th, JP and I spent the morning together running errands and I finished my night with choir practice.

I had a three-month checkup with my family practice doctor on Thursday the 16th. He tells me that I have bursitis and it is caused by not wearing the proper shoes on my “flat feet.” He referred me to an orthotic supplier and told me that he’d check to see how I was doing with them in 3 months. Otherwise, I can look forward to cortisone shots!

I took a day trip to Ormond Beach to visit brother-in-law, Edward, on the 17th. He is recuperating well since his November surgery. When I dashed off a text to nephew, Mat, to let him know about my visit with Edward, he said that he and his fiancée, Lindsay, were on their way to Joshua Tree National Park and sent the picture below.

Dad and I went to the YMCA gym on Monday, the 20th; I did my regular volunteer work on Tuesday, followed by a dinner meeting/teacher training session at church (I am a substitute teacher.) On Wednesday and Thursday, I had choir practice and visitation. On Friday, 1/24, I met with my friend, Jackie, to drive up to Brandon so that she would know where to take Ken in about a week for an appointment with a new doctor. This one is a pulmonologist – he has a very hard time breathing. I went to get measured for custom fit orthotics for my “flat feet” in the afternoon and that evening, Dad and I attended the monthly Senior Pot-Luck supper.

The rest of the month included mostly routine outings. Mat, pictured above, celebrated his 46th birthday, in San Diego.  One thing that was not routine was that Emma (6-year-old) got her ears pierced Sunday, 1/26, afternoon then later, she lost her second tooth. Thursday, 1/30, I got my annual mamo (another referral from the doc on the 16th), and after a short visit with friend, Ken Sosville, went to lunch with his wife, Jackie.
