November 1 through 15:  Birthdays, a tropical storm and a sinus infection

Routine Activities included:

  • Sunday: Sunday School and Church (Dad is staying home still due to COVID-19)
  • Monday, Wednesday and Friday: YMCA for both of us to work out
  • Tuesday: Volunteer in the church office doing data input and then at the North River Care Pregnancy Center
  • Ensemble practice at church (Because of COVID-19, we cannot have a whole choir)

Monday, 11/2 was my granddaughter, Vanessa’s, 22nd birthday.  I took her to lunch at Olive Garden (her choice). Then, in the evening, I stayed with Emma while JP and Kellie took her out to Ruth’s Chris Steak House in St. Pete for supper.

Tuesday, 11/3, was the official Presidential Election Day.  (Dad and I voted by mail – dropping the ballots off in a collection box at an early voting location.)  A Coronavirus (COVID-19) update was issued saying 91,500 new cases were reported nationwide, the second-highest one-day total since the pandemic began. The only day that’s seen more was last Friday, when 99,000 were added.  On Thursday, 11/5 – Over 100,000 new cases of covid-19 reported in the U.S.  And on Friday, 11/6 – Over 120,000 new cases of covid-19 were reported in the U.S.  I did some shopping in the morning on Saturday, 11/7.  When I stopped for lunch, I found out that news agencies had called the presidential race in favor of Joe Biden but President Trump says he is going ahead with legal proceedings and will not concede until they are concluded.  Sunday, 11/8 – Emma went to Sunday school and church with me today while Dad stayed home and watched the service on You Tube.  The news announced that the US surpassed 130,000 new cases of Coronavirus.  Winds were gusty Monday, 11/9, as Tropical Storm Eta passed through the Florida Keys and moved into the Gulf of Mexico building its strength back.  Manatee County was under a tropical storm warning; some schools were closed; and the Sunshine Skyway Bridge which connects Manatee and Pinellas County (St. Petersburg) was closed to all traffic before 7 a.m.  The people who live in the greater Tampa Bay area awoke to the surprising news on Wednesday, 11/11, that Tropical Storm Eta (expected to re-strengthen to hurricane status) was headed directly toward us.  All of the counties on the Gulf Coast from Sarasota to the Big Bend area were on hurricane watch.  All area schools were closed.  The rain and wind got worse as the day went on, so Dad and I decided not to go to the YMCA to workout.  In the afternoon, Emma and I surprised her PaPa (my father) with a small Happy Veterans Day ceremony.  He served in the United States Navy and is a Veteran of the Korean War.  She presented him with a card that we made together and we lit some candles on cupcakes with red and blue icing while we sang Happy Veterans’ Day to You.  After putting out the candles, Emma said the Pledge of Allegiance and then we ate the cupcakes.  My brother, Bill, also texted asking me to tell Dad “thanks for his service”.  We stayed in again on Thursday, 11/12,  as the weather cleared.  In the afternoon, I came down with a stuffy head and watery eyes but no temperature.  I was feeling a little worse but went for a blood draw at my doctor’s office to check on my A1C (a diabetic test)in the morning on Friday, 11/13, so I stayed in bed the rest of the day and told JP that Emma should not come over.  I had such a miserable night that I decided to go to the Ellenton Urgent Care office Saturday, 11/14, (which was JP’s 41st birthday. The nurse practitioner said I had a sinus infection with fluid in my ears.  I told her that I was concerned that the medications I had taken for my misery had caused my sugar count to go up to an unacceptable level.  So, she prescribed amoxicillin for 10 days along with Flonase which she said should not affect my sugar level as what I was taking.  On the way home, I picked up the medicine and then went to my CPA’s office.  To thank his clients this year, Jim Gay, CPA held a drive-by pie give away.  Thanks to him for such a thoughtful gift.  I was back in bed by noon.  On Sunday, 11/15, Dad and I watched today’s church service via You Tube on tv and then I went back to bed while he watched football the rest of the day.  JP, Kellie and the girls celebrated his birthday together in the early evening at the Melting Pot restaurant.

Monday, 11/16Sun. 11/22

I spent the week fighting my sinus infection, so most routine activities were cancelled.  Sunday, 11/22, would have been Rick’s 71st birthday.  Our friend, Captain Andrew of Comfort Tours on Great Exuma posted the picture below.  He used to tell people that he and Rick were brothers – he was born and night and Rick was born during the daylight.

Monday, 11/23Monday 11/30

Although we didn’t go to the Y this week, I did go to volunteer at church and NRC on Tuesday.  I made deviled eggs for Thanksgiving which we spent with JP, Kellie, their girls and Kellie’s mother, dad and half-sister.  Also, Vanessa brought a friend who would have been alone.  On Friday, I visited with Jackie and her mother, Gladys, who recently turned 90.

I spent some time on Saturday finishing a Christmas needlepoint project to take to a friend at church tomorrow.

Sun, 11/29 – Emma joined me for Sunday School and Church while Dad stayed home.  We stopped by Papi’s rock after church to put a Christmas wreath on the angle that watches over it.

The month ended on Monday, 11/30.  Dad woke up with a bad back, so we stayed home for him to rest.  The Coronavirus Pandemic grew by leaps and bounds. By the end of the month there were more than 13,500,000 cases in the U.S.
