10/1 – 10/7

We were on Ormond Beach for the first couple of days of the month along with brother, Edward, and nephew, Mat.   We returned to Palmetto on Monday afternoon, 10/3, so that I could go to a one-week follow-up appointment with my surgeon.  On Tuesday, Dr. South told us that the pathology report from the hysterectomy indicated that the cancer had grown through approximately 60% of my uterine wall.  At 50%, they consider it gone.  At 60% they say I have a 20% chance that the cancer could re-occur.  With radiation, that chance would be reduced to 5% or less.  So I have opted to get the radiation treatments (5 days a week for 6 weeks) after we return from our cruise.  I saw my regular doctor on Wednesday afternoon and after returning to the boat got a call from Ormond saying that Rick’s mother had passed away.  There is no memorial get-together planned as yet.

Age 91

We were going to go over there, but Hurricane Mathew was headed that way.  That evening, the government issued a mandatory evacuation order for everyone living on the beach side or Ormond.  (That included Edward.)  He and Mat went to stay at my Dad’s cabin in the Ocala Forest on Thursday, 10/6.  They lost power there during the night, so on Friday,10/7, they left Ocala with Mat returning to Knoxville and Edward coming to Palmetto to stay on the boat with us until power has been restored at his home.

10/7/10/19/2016Edward stayed with us on the boat through Monday, 10/10.  He returned to Ormond while we were at Moffitt for another infusion for Rick.  When we left Moffitt, we went up I-75 to Ocala and went by the cabin to make sure there was no damage there before going on to Ormond.  We were in Ormond for a week starting Monday evening, staying at Edward’s.  His yard guy cleaned up most of the major tree limbs in the yard and lumber washed up on his dock.  Roofers came and repaired the roof over the “pool house” addition.  Then ServePro came to work on the water damage in the addition, taking out the dropped ceiling tiles and insulation in the ceiling and drying out the couch, bed and rugs.  Since it has not yet been 3 weeks since my hysterectomy, I was not able to help with a lot of the cleanup, so my main focus was to go through Rick and Edward’s mother’s “stuff”.  I made a good dent in that project this week, but it is going to take a lot more.

We left Ormond Beach Sunday morning 10/17/16, returning to Palmetto.  Meeting Sunday evening and all day Monday with attorney’s regarding Rick’s Mesothelioma.

Tuesday, I had an appointment with my surgeon for my 3-week follow-up after hysterectomy.  All looks good, next appointment in January.  Wednesday, 10/19, , I saw the radiation doc to discuss when I will be able to start my radiation treatments.  Good news – I will only need one treatment a week for 3 weeks in January.

Thursday, October 20, leave the boat at 5 a.m., fly out of Tampa to Los Angeles then transfer to the Crown Princess to start our cruise to Hawaii, Samoa, and Tahiti returning on November 17th.

9/1 – 9/3

The first few days of the month, we dealt with a lot of rain and some wind as Tropical Storm Hermine sat off of our coast and then proceeded up through the panhandle of Florida as a hurricane.  Our area had lots of rain, but nothing to compare with the folks not too far north of here who were flooded out of their homes and businesses for days.  Mom was sent back to the hospital on the first after falling at the rehab center.  Once there, they discovered that she had another Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) and admitted her.

Sunday, 9/4/16 – 9/10

We wished a happy birthday to our friend Ann Mahoney on Sunday.  I got my hair trimmed.  We celebrated Labor Day quietly at home on the boat Monday, highlighted by FSU’s come from behind win over Ole Miss in the first weekend of college football.  On Tuesday I had a hysteroscopy and a D & C.  I was back on the boat resting at 10 a.m., and slept most of the day.  We house sat for JP and Kellie on Thursday morning when they took Emma to the doctor for her three-year-old checkup.  She now weighs just under 30 pounds and the doctor told them that he thought she would grow to be 5 foot 2 – but no eyes of blue.  She has her father’s beautiful, big brown eyes.  While we were at the house, workers installed new wood flooring in the kitchen and dining room.  In the afternoon, I went to Manatee Diagnostic Center(MDC) for another test.  I’ll get the results in about a week.  I was told to take it easy for the next three days.  In the evening, Rick attended a special meeting at the BYC to determine if they can spend money on a new roof at the beginning of the year.  On Friday, we drove up to Ocala to get Dad’s mail and pay some of his bills and check to see if there was any storm damage.  While at the cabin, Rick discovered a screw in one of our tires, so we drove into Ocala to a Tire Kingdom and then waited about an hour for them to remove the screw before returning to Palmetto.  Mom was released from the hospital and returned to the rehab center.  On Saturday, we went to JP’s to retrieve our remaining clothes (mostly formal wear) so that our granddaughter, Vanessa, could use the closet now that she has moved back home and is using the downstairs bedroom.  They moved granddaughter, Emma, into Vanessa’s old room upstairs as it is about twice as big as her original room.  We came back to the boat to watch the FSU football game on TV and were happy to see them win again.

Sunday, September 11, 2016 – 9/17

On Sunday, we joined friends, Bill and Ruth to watch the Tampa Bay Buccaneers win their second game of the season.  On Monday, Rick stayed with Emma while JP and I took a car load of her old stuff to donate to the North River Care Pregnancy Center where I used to volunteer and to return several boxes of wood flooring that wasn’t used on the kitchen/dining room project.  Tuesday brought us good and not so good news.  The test results from MDC were negative (a very good thing) but the biopsy taken during my D & C was positive, so now I must have a hysterectomy.  Both of the doctors that have spoken to us about this say that a hysterectomy almost always completely takes care of uterine cancer so we should not be worried.  I go to see yet another doctor next week.  This may cause us to cancel our cruise in October/November.  On Wednesday, we drove to Ocala and I went into town to visit with Dad.  Then, we drove to Ormond Beach to visit with Edward and Mom staying overnight and returning to Palmetto on Thursday.  Friday morning found us on the highway again.  This time, we drove to Tampa to the Moffitt Cancer Center for Rick to receive his first infusion of an experimental drug called Keytruda.  Keytruda has been approved by the FDA for lung cancer and good results have been achieved.  It has not yet been approved for Mesothelioma, but he received special approval to get it.  The doctor said that it was normally administered once every three weeks.  His next appointment is October 10.  Rick worked on the boat in the afternoon.  On Saturday, Rick worked in the engine room in the morning and then we watched the FSU/Louisville football game on TV in the afternoon.  Much to everyone’s surprise, we watched FSU take the worst loss in its football history.  Congratulations to Louisville who will most certainly rise from its previous 10th ranking after soundly beating FSU that was ranked #2.

Sunday, 9/18 – 9/24

Sunday, 9/18/16 – We watched the Miami Dolphins lose and then we watched the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lose.  On Monday we went by JP’s to pick up our mail.  Rick and JP worked on strengthening the fence gate.   Then, we drove to Ocala and stopped by Dad’s rehab center on the way to the cabin.  I brought him outside to sit on the patio so Rick and I could both visit with him for a short while.  He is doing well.  We spent the night at the cabin in the forest and then returned to the rehab center for another short visit with Dad before returning to Palmetto on Tuesday.  On Wednesday we saw an oncology gynecologist, Dr. Stacey South.  She said that she will schedule me for a complete hysterectomy at Manatee Memorial Hospital on Monday, 9/26.  This hospital is just across the river from where we live.  On Thursday and Friday, 9/22 and 9/23,  I went to the hospital for pre-admission blood draws. Then on Friday, we took the boat up to the St. Petersburg Yacht Club where we met about a dozen other boats from our yacht club for the weekend.  About half of us attended a special “Jazz dinner” at the St. Pete club on Friday night; then about 24 of us went to supper together on Saturday at the nearby Haufbrau House in St. Pete.  Everyone had good food and enjoyed the good entertainment.

Sunday, 9/25/16 – 10/1/16

We had a smooth ride back to our home port on Sunday arriving just before noon then spent a quiet afternoon.  We drove across the bridge from our marina to the hospital to check into outpatient services at 6 a.m Monday.  Dr. South performed the complete hysterectomy and spoke with Rick after the procedure.  I woke up in recovery around 1:00 in the afternoon.  They kept me overnight for observation and I was released from the hospital mid-morning on Tuesday.  On Wednesday, I walked from the boat to the end of the dock.  On Thursday, I walked from the boat to the parking lot, then rode in the car to JP’s to get the mail, and walked back down the dock to the boat. On Friday, we drove to Ocala to pick up Dad’s mail and returned to the boat.  We met friends for supper at the Riverside Café then I went to bed as soon as we got back to the boat around 9 p.m.  At 11:00, we got a call from Rick’s brother, Edward, saying Mom was gasping for air and Hospice had been called to her bedside.  He thought we better come over.  So, we quickly packed a small bag and got back on the road for a few more hours on the interstate.  When we arrived in Ormond at 2 a.m., Edward said Mom was resting quietly and we went to the house.

We saw Mom on 9/30 and Sunday, 10/1/16.  She was unresponsive both times.   Rick’s cousin, Louis, along with his mother, Aunt Delores, and Nora, came over with dinner on Sunday.  Our nephew, Mat arrived from Knoxville around 9 p.m.
