We left Ft. Myers, traveling by car.  We went to visit Rick’s mother and brother’s home in Ormond Beach then went to Palmetto for Thanksgiving, stopping on the way for a short visit in the Ocala forest with Dad.

While in Ormond, we had a nice visit with Tillie and Jimmy.  They live on Andros Island and we look forward to see them again in January.

While in Palmetto, we enjoyed helping Bill and Ruth celebrate their 15th wedding anniversary on 11/29/11.

We are now at the St. Charles Yacht Club in Ft. Myers and plan to have the boat tied up to their docks for the next two weeks.  We will be gone for some of the time to visit family and friends for the holiday and take care of some last minute retirement and insurance business.

St. Charles Yacht Club is the smallest yacht club in the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs and, in our opinion, one of the friendliest.  The evening we arrived, we ate in the club.  Their power fleet had returned a day early from a trip to Naples due to expected high winds the next few days.  They invited us to have  dinner with them, which we really enjoyed.   Saturday, 11/19/11, we rented a car and stopped for a late lunch at Doc Ford’s Rum Bar and Grille at the foot of the bridge going to Ft. Myers Beach.  We ate on the waterfront deck and listened to a nice jazz band called Juice. We both said that it made us think of our friends Christy and Michael.  Saturday evening again found us in the club.  They were having a monthly “Port of Call” dinner/dance.  The port for this month was Alaska.  Everything was decorated nicely and we had a great dinner and some fun dancing.  We were seated at a table for eight and were welcomed right in to the group.  This is a great club to visit.

We journeyed south from Venice Yacht Club to an anchorage just off of the Florida State park on the island of Cayo Costa on the north side of Boca Grande pass.  There is no wi-fi coverage.  There are five of us anchored in this cove and many more out in the small Pelican Bay.  Rick woke up early the next morning when the dew from the sea fog started dripping through the hatch screen onto his face!  We took the dingy over to the State Park a couple of days while we were here and enjoyed walking on the beach.  We used to come here almost 20 years ago to camp and to stay in the cabins. Boy how things have changed. There used to be Australian pine trees all over providing shade, but now there are none.  Back then, our friends and we took our small boats into the cove a couple of times.  Once, after we had just called the kids out of the water, we saw an alligator run across the beach and dive into the cove where the boys had just been sailing. Now, the cove has signs posted all around it that say “No Swimming – Alligators”.

The BYC power fleet’s November 11-13 cruise-away was to the Venice Yacht Club.  What a Bon Voyage get-together!  The Saturday evening group dinner at the Crow’s Nest was followed up at the VYC tiki bar.  Before dinner, we enjoyed a short visit from the Trembicki’s.  Later, the 26 diners (pictured below) were joined by the Messer’s and Ross’s for the “roast”.  Rick and I were a little worried about that, but it turned out to be really nice. There are 11 letters in our last name, so 11 different people got up and gave an alliterated Bon Voyage wish to us based upon the letter that they had selected.  A couple of examples are: ‘ “E” Enough of the erratic float plan.  It’s time for this Engineer and his first mate to Escape, Eat hearty, Engage those Engines and head East to Eleuthera and the Exumas and all the other Exciting, Enviable and Exotic (or erotic) places!  Fair winds to you and Happy Endings!’ ‘ “R” Rick and Charlene, We really hope you are ready for a radically good time as you rookies realize rich rewards in your relationships with ramps and ropes and find only rainbows.’  We were very impressed and touched.

We have differing opinions.  Rick thinks our trip starts today, 11/3/2011, as we leave Riviera Dunes Marina, our home for more than a year.  I think that it doesn’t really start until November 14, when we leave the Venice Yacht Club docks having said goodbye to our BYC Power Fleet friends.

Our first stop was the Bradenton Yacht Club where we have been members for many years.  Rick was the Power Fleet captain for two years and I was involved through the entertainment committee and the Great Mates.  We had a wonderful time over the weekend seeing so many friends and sharing special memories.  We will miss you all and hope many of you will fly to see us as we travel.  Next, we will go just a short way down to the Sarasota Yacht Club and stay a few nights.
