Routine this month:

  • Volunteering church and pregnancy center.
  • Working out at the YMCA 3 days a week.
  • Monthly massage.
  • Dad’s 3-month follow-up checkup with his doctor in Parrish.
  • Sunday school and church for me, Dad and Emma.
  • Choir practice on Wednesday evenings.

Fun/Special:

On Friday, 2/1, Dad and I drove over to the First Baptist Church at the Mall in Lakeland to attend the Florida Worship Choir and Orchestra concert. We met ten others from our church for a really good BBQ dinner before the concert and returned home about 10:00 p.m.

On Sunday, 2/3, after church, Dad, Emma and I stopped by the cemetery to place some roses at Rick’s memorial stone. (Emma calls it “ Papi’s Rock”)

Later in the afternoon, Dad called his friend, Tim Langford, in the Daytona Beach area, to let him know that we would not be able to come over for the Alligator Enduro (motorcycle race) in March because of my surgery. Then, he called his cousin Marianne in Alabama to check in on her and her husband and the rest of his cousins from Louisiana. Marianne told him that her husband, Cecil, had fallen about a week ago. Her family was there to help take care of him and he was doing OK. She said that she had been a little down because of it, but Dad’s phone call had really perked her up. They had a short visit on the phone and promised to stay in touch more often in the future. In the evening, we joined J.P., Kellie and Emma for a “Super Bowl” cookout with a “football cake” for desert. Supper was over by the first quarter of the game and we went to our respective quarters in the house. (Dad and I live in the in-law suite.)

I stopped by the cemetery to wish Rick a Happy Valentine’s Day on 2/14. JP gave me some lovely roses for Valentine’s Day.Bouquet of Roses from JP

Preparing for Surgery:

  • Dad and I visited two rehab centers in order to make a decision as to where to stay after the surgery.
  • I received a letter from the surgeon telling me that both my cardiologist and family practitioner need to OK me for surgery meeting specific requirements. It also notified me of pre-op appointments with him and the hospital and a post-op appointment with him as well as a therapy appointment
  • I had an appointment and echocardiogram with my cardiologist.
  • I changed my hairstyle to a “pixie cut”
  • I saw my primary physician who said he couldn’t sign-off on the surgery until I had new bloodwork done. His concern was my iron level. The surgeon wants it to be 12 or more and 3 months ago it was only 11.
  • Went back the next day to the doctor’s office for blood work.
  • Waited over the weekend and was happy to receive the call from the doc’s office telling me the iron level was 12.2!
  • Bought a cane. (Have a walker left over from Rick’s illness)
  • Pre-op appointment with surgeon went smoothly.
  • At the pre-op appointment at the hospital they did a nose swab which I found out later that afternoon came back positive. The surgeon’s assistant who called with the results said that meant that I was susceptible to catching MRSA, so she called in an ointment for me to use until the day of the surgery.
  • Packed Dad’s stuff for his stay at the rehab center
  • Received a call from the rehab center saying that they probably would not have room for us and I should find another place to stay.
  • Had Merry Maids come to clean the in-law suite.
  • On the way to Sun City so JP could see the alternative rehab center, I got a call from the first one saying that they would have room for us after all. What a relief!
  • Pack bags for me to take to the hospital and to the rehab center.
  • Received call from hospital to let me know that surgery has been scheduled at 1:45 and I should be there at 11:45.
  • JP took me to the hospital and waited with me until they started preparing me for surgery. While waiting, we were joined by Interim Pastor Tom and Minister of Music, Jeff to visit for a short while and say a prayer. The surgeon informed JP that all went well and I was transferred to a room around 6 p.m.
  • I started therapy.
